ARBER James Blacksmith 1790 James Arber, blacksmith. Born 1790 baptised 23 May 1790 in Burwell, Cambridgeshire, England. Son of Benjamin and Sarah. In 1804 James Arber was an apprentice to George Hills Snr in Burwell. James may have moved on from George Hills after 1811. I have not been able to trace where he was or who he married first. In 1838 he is marrying (for the second time) to a Martha Taylor (nee Easton a widow) in Newington, Surrey, both at 39 High Street. In 1841 we find James, Martha (wife) & daughter Emma + a servant living at Eden Place in Wandsworth Surrey, listed as a whitesmith (either a tin worker or polisher on blacksmiths work). In 1851 we find James, Martha (wife) & stepdaughter Mary Ann Taylor, daughter Emma + a servant living at Eden Place in Wandsworth Surrey, Listed as a Blacksmith. James dies in 1853 & was buried in Battersea. Also listed in Whitesmiths Index..  
COLE John Blacksmith 1835 John Cole, blacksmith. Born about 1835 in Witchford, Cambridgeshire, England. Married Ellen Brand in Ely June qtr 1855. He had blacksmith premises in Ely and died post 1891C. There is a connection with Charles Joselyn who was licensee of the Peacock Inn in Ely. More information sought..  
CORBY John Blacksmith 1865 John Corby, blacksmith. Born in 1865 in Coates, Cambridgeshire, England. The 1871 census lists John as 6yrs. He lives with his family in the Public House, Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire. Parents: Thomas 37yrs (a butcher), Alice 37yrs. Siblings: six in all listed. In 1881 John 16yrs, is listed as an apprentice blacksmith with blacksmith master Reason Smith, in Whittlesey. 1911: John is 40yrs, a blacksmith, living at No: 7 Norfolk Street, Boston, Lincolnshire. Wife Phoebe 41yrs. Married 10 years..  
FARRANT John Blacksmith 1799 John Farrant was born in 1799 in Ely. He is shown as a blacksmith in Littleport Cambridgeshire on the 1841 to 1871 census. In 1881 he is in Rotherhithe Surrey, also listed as a blacksmith. John is my Great Great Grandfather..  
GATTWARD Albert Blacksmith 1843 Albert Gattward, blacksmith. Baptised on 15 Oct 1843 at Orwell, Cambs. He is recorded in the 1861 Census as a Blacksmith whilst living with his father James who was a Wheelwright. In July 1867 at Royston, Herts he married Caroline Reynolds. They moved to Harlton, Cambs and he is recorded in the 1871 Census as a Blacksmith. They had two children in Harlton. Around 1874 they moved to the neighbouring village of Haslingfield. Albert is recorded in the 1879 Kelly's directory for Cambridge and the 1881 Census at Haslingfield working as a Blacksmith. Albert and Caroline had another two children here. In Nov 1901 Albert became the Licensee for the Marquis of Granby Public House in Haslingfield, he died in 1921 aged 77. His wife Caroline lived until 1933..  
GATTWARD Charles Blacksmith 1836 Charles Gattward, blacksmith. Baptised in 1836 in Orwell, Cambridgeshire, England. Worked in Orwell as a blacksmith as recorded in the 1861 Census & is living at 46 Orwell Street, Orwell, aged 25 with his wife Caroline aged 22. His father was John Gattward a Wheelwright – see Wheelwrights Index..  
ROBINSON Stephen Blacksmith 1821 Stephen Robinson, Blacksmith. Born 6th March 1821 in Thorney, Cambridgeshire, England. Parents: John Robinson and Elizabeth nee Wilson. He married Sarah Chapman ( born 1823 in Geddington, Kettering, Northamptonshire). Sarah was the daughter of John Chapman and Elizabeth nee Hipwell. Stephen & Sarah Robinson immigrated to South Australia on 23rd March 1848 from Plymouth, England aboard the "David Malcolm". Stephen was employed as a Constable on the voyage and received a sum of two pounds. They had 13 children (2 born in the UK and 11 born in South Australia). One son John died on the journey to South Australia while another son James who was also aboard survived. Stephen Robinson, died on 31st March 1879 at Macclesfield, South Australia at the age of 58yrs and was buried in the Anglican Cemetery at Macclesfield, South Australia. Stephen is listed in Blacksmiths of Australia & Blacksmiths of Cambridgeshire. See Blacksmiths of Australia for details another son, William Robinson..  
SMITH Reason Blacksmith 1841 Reason Smith, blacksmith. Born on 30 Birth February 1841, at Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire. The 1841 census lists Reason as a 3-month-old infant. Parents William Smith 41yrs (a gardener) and Martha 35yrs. Siblings: William 16yrs, Alice 8yrs, Charlotte 5yrs, Thomas 3yrs. 1851 Reason is 10 years old and living with his family in Windmill Street, Whittlesey. In 1861 Reason is 20yrs, a blacksmith apprentice with master blacksmith John Setchfield, 45yrs, in Whittlesey. The 1871 census lists Reason as 30 years, a blacksmith at Swinstead, Lincolnshire, England. Living with his sister Emma Smith 20yrs. He is my Great Uncle. Also listed is Alfred Hull, 20 years, born at St Albans, Hertfordshire a blacksmith, boarding with Reason Smith. 1881 Reason is 40yrs, with wife Mary 37yrs (born Swinfield) living in Whittlesey. Also listed is apprentice blacksmith John Corby 16yrs. By 1901 Reason is a retired blacksmith 60yrs old, Mary 56yrs, still in Whittlesey..
