|
| ATHERTON |
Thomas |
Watchmaker & Coal Miner |
1881 |
Thomas Atherton, watchmaker & coal miner. The 1881 UK census lists him as 16yrs, living with his father at 22 Warrington Road, (formerly New Road?) Prescot, Lancashire, UK. 1891: 26yrs, living at Whiston Cross, Whiston, Lancashire (now Merseryside) and is a coal miner. It is perhaps not a coincidence that in this census, he is shown living in the household next to the parents of his wife Mary Lyon. Mary's father and brothers are all coal miners. Perhaps the coal mining boom of the time snatched him away from a family tradition of watchmaking. Thomas and Mary had 12 children (that we know of) but we have only been able to find nine of them so far - Minnie, William, Thomas, John, Jessie, Mary, Sarah Heleanor, Jim and Hannah Standish. See Watchmakers Index for his father John (born c1841) and grandfather John (born c1803)..

| LEVITT |

1800 |
Lewis Levitt, clockmaker. I am still researching Mr Levitt who became a member of the WCC by redemption in 1832 and apprenticed his son Isaac as a Clockmaker in June 1832, I am working on the assumption he was already an accomplished Clockmaker before 1832 as two Wardsmen of the WCC had to sign off on his ability as a clockmaker to become a Member of the WCC. It is difficult to get information when in Australia but as I have the clock and I am restoring it I would like to see if he has a place in the Clock as a Blacksmith Clockmaker, I can supply pictures if they are of interest. your time to reply is appreciated..

George Mills (Milne) 59yrs,No 4 Victoria Terrace, Basingstoke, Hampshire, England. I am not absolutely 100% sure that the photo is of George, but that is who my aunt has said it is. I have put the name Milne (Mills) as he moved down to Hampshire in about 1849 from Aberdeen in Scotland, then for some unknown reason changed the family name to Mills. It may be that no one could understand his broad Aberdeen accent..
