| MURRAY |
John James |
Blacksmith |
1843 |
John James Murray (James) was born in 1843 in Tubbrid, County Limerick, Ireland. He died on 24 Jul 1913 in South Yarra, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. He was buried in R C Section, Grave 35, Pyramid Hill Cemetery, Victoria, Australia. John James had learned the trade of Blacksmithing in Ireland. He met up with a man named John Connell who had set up a business as a Carpenter & Joiner. They combined their skills and set up a "Wheelwright & Smithy" business in the Clifford (Or Clifton) area near Geelong and later moved a few miles away to Mount Moriac and set up "Shop" and it was here that John was to meet his future wife Mary Ann Todd, a Farmers Daughter. Sometime in 1873/74 a big decision was made to take up land, which was up for "Selection" in the Pyramid Hill area of Victoria. It is uncertain whose idea it was, but John James, his wife Mary Ann, John Connell, and family all descended on an area called the Parish of Mincha West, where they staked claims to land. The two "John's" had built a house, set up a Forge, and began operating the Blacksmithing Business again. As usual, water was the most important commodity in the area and the Murray clan gave up some of their land to allow a road to be built and provide access to the water supply at the same time it also meant that anyone seeking water would have to pass right by the Blacksmith Shop and Murray farm which had been appropriately given the name "Smithfield".
