DOWNS Isaac Blacksmith & Wheelwright 1816 Isaac Downs, a farmer's son was born 13th October 1816. Wife Elizabeth Hopwood, married 1842. He was a Master Blacksmith living and working at Manchester Road, Heaton Norris, Stockport (this being Lancashire in the first half of the century and Cheshire in the latter half). Two of Isaac's sons became blacksmiths, and one became a wheelwright. Isaac died in 1872, but his wife and sons were still running the business in 1891. He is mentioned in the 1891/2 Preston Directory for Bamber Bridge, Lostock Hall, Brownedge, and Blacksmith Tardy Gate. He is also mentioned briefly in the history of St Paulinus' Mission in Lostock Hall..

Children: Margaret 6yrs, John 5yrs, Florence 5 months infant (all born Broughton Lanes, Salford). In 1901 they are at the same address, John 40yrs (blacksmith), Mary 42yrs. Children: Margaret (Maggie) 16yrs, John 15yrs(driver), Florence 10yrs, Thomas 7yrs, Joseph 2yrs. The 1911 census has them living at 36 Mildred Lane, Broughton. John 50yrs (iron worker, blacksmith striker) Mary 51yrs, Florrie 20yrs,single(shirt maker), Thomas 16yrs (clerk), Joseph 12yrs(school)..  
PAGE Charles Blacksmith 1850 Charles Page, blacksmith Bloomer. In the 1850 census, Charles Page was a bloomer in the "Blast Furnace, Steel Works and Rolling Mills Industry". This was most likely the Peru Iron Company. After serving a two-year sentence for "seduction" and then fighting for the Vermont Cavalry in the US Civil War, the 1870 census shows Charles living in Waltham, Massachusetts, and earning his living as a blacksmith..

He died some time after 1891..

He married Elizabeth Woods in Liverpool in 1845 and they had at least 11 children of which 3 were boys. Michael was listed as a blacksmith from 1841 through 1871 in Kirkham, in Alston in 1881, and then in Blackpool in 1891 through 1895.  By 1901, he had returned to Alston, although not listed as a blacksmith in that census..

Michael was born in Kirkham in 1866, third son of Michael Parker and Elizabeth (nee Woods).  Michael married Mary Alice Seedall in Blackpool in 1889 and they had at least 3 children, 2 of which were boys. He was listed as a blacksmith in Blackpool from 1891 through to 1901. In 1895, he was listed in Kelly's Directory as being a blacksmith in Moon St, South Shore, Blackpool. He died in the Blackpool in 1938..  
PARKER Richard Blacksmith 1803 Richard Parker, blacksmith. Richard was born in Warton in 1803, fifth son of Thomas Parker and Rosamond (nee Ashcroft). He married Elizabeth Carter in Preston in 1829 and they had at least 11 children of which 5 were boys (although one died as an infant). Richard was listed as a blacksmith in Preston in the 1841 census, working on the High St I believe. In 1851, he was still operating as a blacksmith on the High St, and in 1861 the family had moved to Gt. Hanover St, where he was still a blacksmith, aged 56.  He died around 1878..  
PARKER Thomas Blacksmith 1764 Thomas Parker, blacksmith. Thomas was born circa 1764 in Lytham. Married Rosamond Ashcroft in Preston in 1793. They had 10 children, of which 6 were boys, from 1793 through 1815. they moved from Preston to Warton around 1800 and then to Kirkham around 1805. Thomas was first noted as a blacksmith in Kirkham in 1811 (Holden's Trade Directory 1811). In 1841, he was still a blacksmith, aged 77 (noted as "75" on the 1841 census), and in fact he was also still listed as a blacksmith in 1851, aged 87, when living with his youngest daughter Ann and her family.  Thomas died in 1854 at her house in Liverpool and was buried at St. Michael’s Church in Kirkham. Of Thomas’ children, John, James. Richard and George all became blacksmiths, and Michael and Thomas became shoemakers..

He married Mary Jackson in Preston in 1846 and they had at least 10 children of which 5 were boys. Thomas was listed as a blacksmith in all censuses; in Thornton in 1841, in Forton in 1851, in Kirkland in 1861 through to 1891. He died in 1898, presumably in Kirkland. In 1855, he was listed in the "List of Persons in Trade, Clergy and Gentry, for Garstang and Surrounds, 1855” as being in Hollins Lane in Kirkland..

REAY James Blacksmith 1880 James (Jim) Reay, blacksmith, whitesmith, horseshoer. Born 2 May 1880, Workington, Cumberland. Served apprenticeship with Birkett's, Blacksmith, at Portinscale, Keswick, Cumberland. In about 1910, moved to Scotforth, Lancaster, Lancashire, to the smithy of James Dixon on Dixon's death. James Reay appears as the blacksmith in Kelly's Directory of Lancaster, 1918. He appears in The 1939 Register at 'The Forge', Scotforth Rd, Scotforth, Lancaster. He continued the business of Scotforth Smithy until its closure in the late 1950s. James died at Lancaster on 29 Dec 1962. (James, my grandfather; Photo available.).

The 1911 UK census lists him as 19yrs, living at Blackburn; with widowed mother Sarah Jane Riding 49yrs; sister Maria Riding 23yrs and brother Richard Riding 22yrs. Edmund may be the Ted Riding who worked for shoeing smith John William Rayton, shoeing smith (listed in the Farrier’s index)..  
SMITH James Blacksmith - Master 1807 James Smith, master blacksmith. Born 1807 in ?Lancashire. Died 1873 Lancashire. James came from a family of Blacksmiths. He worked and lived in Ormskirk town centre (Moor Street and Aughton Street). He married Ellen Bridge and they had seven children. If anyone has any information on this family or photos of Blacksmiths in Ormskirk I would love to hear from you..

WILSON David Blacksmith & Iron Moulder 1820 David WIlson, born 1820 place not sure, but almost certain to be Scotland. In 1844 he is named on the birth certificate as the father (David Scotland) to a child (born in Whitby, North Yorkshire) of Hannah Bryan - his occupation is BLACKSMITH. in 1846 he married Hannah Bryan in Whitby, North Yorkshire. His marriage certificate shows him as David Wilson Scotland, bachelor aged 27yrs, an Iron Moulder, living at Baxtergate, Whitby,Nth.Yorkshire. On the 1851 census he is listed as David Wilson aged 30,an Iron Moulder, in Lower Bent, Oldham (ref A0180) with wife Hannah 26yrs. Children: Mary 2yrs & Elizabeth 1 month infant. Elizabeth's birth certificate for 20/01/1851 also gives David's surname as Wilson and his occupation as IRON MOULDER Elizabeth was born in Wigan. Also listed in Blacksmiths of Yorkshire and in the Iron workers Index. David is a 2 x Great grandfather of mine..  
WORDEN Henry Blacksmith 1800 Henry Worden, blacksmith. Born 1800 in Preston, Lancashire . Between 1821 and 1851 Henry lived in Walton Village (now called Walton le Dale). In 1871 Henry worked at Rose Smithery Leyland with John Swarbrick. The 1881 census lists him as 80yrs, a widower living at District Fullward Workhouse, Preston. He died in Preston Workhouse 1882..
