James (Jim) Reay, blacksmith, whitesmith, horseshoer. Born 2 May 1880, Workington, Cumberland. Served apprenticeship with Birkett's, Blacksmith, at Portinscale, Keswick, Cumberland. In about 1910, moved to Scotforth, Lancaster, Lancashire, to the smithy of James Dixon on Dixon's death. James Reay appears as the blacksmith in Kelly's Directory of Lancaster, 1918. He appears in The 1939 Register at 'The Forge', Scotforth Rd, Scotforth, Lancaster. He continued the business of Scotforth Smithy until its closure in the late 1950s. James died at Lancaster on 29 Dec 1962. (James, my grandfather; Photo available.).
