His other children were baptized at Wartling. Sons Horace, John, Edward and Aaron all became blacksmiths. Henry died aged 42, leaving his sons to continue the blacksmithing business. His will, which he made 20 April1832, was proved by his brother Samuel Firrell of Brighton on 4th August 1834 and the 14 acres of freehold land and a further half acre, both at Wartling, was left to his widow Sarah until their seven children came of age and then to her absolutely if she remained a widow. Effects were under £300. Sarah continued to live at the forge and by 1841 her son Horace was working there as a blacksmith with his younger brother Edward. | FLEET |
Benjamin |
Blacksmith |
1846 |
Benjamin Fleet, blacksmith, farrier. Born 1846 in Isfield, Sussex and died 1898 in Portsea, Hants. I am the great-grandson of Benjamin Fleet, the son of another Benjamin Fleet (1818-??) and Mary Fleet (née Pierce, 1817-1892) m.1839 Lewes, Sussex. Sadly, I have no documentation with which to confirm the family history details relayed to me that my Gt-Grandfather Benjamin (1846-1898) was a Farrier Blacksmith who held a "contract in Portsmouth Dockyard" to shoe horses. It was never said WHICH dockyard, (if there were more than just the naval yard in Portsmouth at the time) nor precisely where he ran his trade. He died fairly young aged 52 or 53. He may towards the end of his life have lived at 4, All Saints Road Portsmouth, which is the address given for his common-law wife, Harriet Fleet (née King, Creamer, 1849-1932) in the 1891 census, although he is not there listed. A reason likely that they were unable to marry as Harriet was abandoned by her first husband following emigrating to New Zealand and being unable to obtain a divorce. After a few stillbirths, they had a single daughter, Frances Maud (b.1881 d.1963), my grandmother. It was said that Benjamin's father was also a blacksmith and both were rumoured to be 'big men'. It may have jumped a generation, my father was 6'2" and my brother and I both 6'7". Should you be able to add to or validate anything from or to these details, I would be most grateful to learn of them. Yours faithfully, ,Peter Rynston. Listed in Hampshire & Sussex..

| PENFOLD |

William Penfold, blacksmith master. Born in 1777 in Horsham, Sussex, England. He married Sarah Muggeridge at the same place in 1798 and by 1840 had a house and land in Southwater. The 1841 census lists William as 63yrs, a master blacksmith, at Southwater. In 1851 William was 73 years old, a blacksmith master living at Wattling’s Row, Horsham. Wife Sarah 72yrs, son Joseph 43yrs, unmarried, and granddaughter Susan 13yrs. His son Joseph lived with him for most of his life and presumably worked at the forge as well. The forge in the Weald & Downland Living Museum is from Southwater and was built in the 1850's. It is tempting to imagine that William played a part in its construction although he died in 1859 and his son Joseph was living in Nuthurst by the time of the 1861 census. .
